Oliver's mother came to the poor house in labor, she left Oliver in that cruel society and died. Oliver grew up in a ghetto and started to work hard when he was just nine years old. The children are engaged in heavy labor every day, but eat only a little gruel and a small piece of bread, and the stewards who abuse them are big fish and big meat. The children were unbearably hungry and decided to draw lots to determine who would make a request to the steward for a little extra food on their behalf. Oliver got the lottery, and he begged the steward in a panic: "Please give me a little more." As a result, this was considered absurd, and the poor house asked him to be an apprentice. In the coffin shop, he ate leftovers from the dogs and was abused.
Oliver fled to London alone. In that big city, he met the thief "clever" Dawkins, was taken to see Fagin, the thief, and fell into the den of thieves. Once, Dawkins and his accomplice Charlie stole something from an old man Brownlow, but the police mistakenly arrested Oliver. After finding out his innocence, the court released him. The kind Brownlow adopted Oliver. However, the good times did not last long, and Oliver was soon abducted by Fagin's accomplices Nancy and Sykes. In fact, Oliver is Brownlow's grandson, and Brownlow's heir, Monks, paid Fagin to watch Oliver in order to win the property. Nancy's conscience is still alive. Seeing the torture the child is suffering, she does everything possible to rescue Oliver. But her actions are discovered by Fagin, who tells Sykes that Nancy was killed by Sykes. The homicide sparks an official hunt for the gang, Fagin is arrested, and Sykes is shot dead. Oliver rescued and returned to grandfather Brownlow    .

I didn't like the original book "Oliver Twist" very much at first, and then I didn't like David Lean more and more. This film can only be said to be mediocre at best, and there is no bright spot. The problem is that there are only one scene in the original book and this movie, and oliver just wanders in one scene after another, from dark to light and then from light to dark, without seeing his characterization and character as the protagonist. I don't think the impact of a story trickling down into a river is that it doesn't exist here. While such a caring ending was indeed moving, the only move came too late, and for me it was unhelpful. Someone as serious and meticulous as David Lean really wants to make more epic movies.

Short stories are just as good. Cinematography is the textbook type of director who speaks through the action of the camera.

Oliver Twist quotes

  • Mrs Sowerberry: Your bed's under the counter. You don't mind, I suppose?

    Oliver Twist: No, ma'am.

Mrs Sowerberry: Doesn't much matter whether you do or you don't, for you can't sleep anywhere else.

  • Mr. Sowerberry: A very good looking boy, that, my dear.

Mrs Sowerberry: He need be. He eats enough.
