I didn't like the original book "Oliver Twist" very much at first, and then I didn't like David Lean more and more. This film can only be said to be mediocre at best, and there is no bright spot. The problem is that there are only one scene in the original book and this movie, and oliver just wanders in one scene after another, from dark to light and then from light to dark, without seeing his characterization and character as the protagonist. I don't think the impact of a story trickling down into a river is that it doesn't exist here. While such a caring ending was indeed moving, the only move came too late, and for me it was unhelpful. Someone as serious and meticulous as David Lean really wants to make more epic movies.

Short stories are just as good. Cinematography is the textbook type of director who speaks through the action of the camera.

Mrs Sowerberry: Your bed's under the counter. You don't mind, I suppose?
Oliver Twist: No, ma'am.
Mrs Sowerberry: Doesn't much matter whether you do or you don't, for you can't sleep anywhere else.

Mr. Sowerberry: A very good looking boy, that, my dear.
Mrs Sowerberry: He need be. He eats enough.
